The present study was carried out based on a survey aimed at Spanish innovating companies. A broad analysis of innovative activities, innovation organisations, success factors and barriers was performed. One issue which receives particular attention is the relationship between strong growth and innovation, with research undertaken into the connection between the two, by identifying the innovative practices that differentiate companies of strong and weak growth.
The study is organised into three parts. Part 1 explains the methodology. Part 2 presents the results of the survey of innovating companies, broken down according to sector (industry and services) and company size. Lastly, Part 3 contains the comparative analysis of innovation in companies of strong and weak growth.
The objective of this study is to contribute to the dissemination of the national innovation system, by showing the elements on which it is based and the relationships between them.
The study has been structured into four parts. The first of these provides an institutional overview of the system. An attempt is made to gain a better understanding of the part played by the different agencies involved in its design and management. The second part presents the basic figures, which convey the scope and articulation in the various sub-systems. The third part consists of a descriptive analysis of the different elements of the system, showing their geographical distribution, and the fourth part presents the national innovation system from a functional perspective.
The use of technology in companies in the tourism sector is awakening growing interest in business and political circles. The very size of the sector makes it a potentially key player in the application of traditional and new technologies. Moreover, tourism is an information-intensive activity, so the new information and communication technologies should have a marked impact on the sector. Added to this is the challenge to be competitive that must be faced by the sector in Spain: to maintain a competitive position based on quality and innovation, where technology can play a key role.
The present study seeks to contribute to an improvement in the information that exists on the technology situation in Spanish tourism companies. Using a survey carried out on 1,600 companies in the sector, a mass of information has been gathered about the technologies used, technology gaps and about obstacles to using technology, amongst other things. The information is analysed for the sector as a whole and for branches of activity (Accommodation, Restaurants, Traveller-Transport and Travel Agencies), which enables us to differentiate between the situations in the various relatively heterogeneous branches that make up the sector.
The objective of this document is to carry out a benchmarking, or comparative exercise, of the different instruments, especially financial instruments, that governments have at their disposal to strengthen and improve innovation in their respective countries and to discover, as far as possible, the results of implementing these instruments. The outcome of this comparison will provide a better understanding of the situation in Spain, and will enable recommendations to be made about technology policy.
The document is structured as follows: The first part describes the policy instruments that exist to influence innovation. The second part describes the financial instruments. The third part presents an analysis of the direct forms of assistance and their effectiveness. The fourth part describes fiscal incentives and their effectiveness. The fifth part contains a comparison of international statistics which focuses on the technology policy instruments used in each country.
